A World Heritage Gem: Nea Moni Monastery
Standing tall in central Chios, along the road to Karyes village, lies the Nea Moni Monastery, a marvel founded in the early 11th century. This historic site is not just a monastery, but a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monument, recognized for its exceptional architecture and artistry.
The Heart of the Monastery: The centerpiece of Nea Moni is the “katholikon,” the main church. This awe-inspiring structure is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship.
A Glimpse into the Past: Venture south of the “katholikon” and you’ll discover the “Trapeza,” the former monastery dining hall. Transformed into a museum thanks to European support, the “Trapeza” now offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. The main exhibit showcases Byzantine sculptures from the 11th century, originally part of the “katholikon,” alongside ceramics, fragments of wall paintings, and informative displays that include visuals, texts, and photographs.
Treasures Through Time: While the monastery’s long history has endured attacks and pillaging, its spirit remains strong. The small on-site museum showcases a collection of donated artifacts from the modern era. Renovated in 1980, the museum offers visitors a chance to admire ecclesiastical and secular silver art from the 18th and 19th centuries, alongside icons from the same period. The museum is curated by the 3rd Division of Byzantine Antiquities of the Greek Archaeological Service.
