Established in 1995 by educator Yiannis Kolliaros, the Kallimasia Folklore Museum on Chios Island is a testament to the enduring power of tradition.

With over 6,000 exhibits spanning 500 square meters, the museum showcases the tangible remnants of a people’s identity, aspects of their lives not captured in history books. These artifacts embody the richness of Chian culture, passed down through generations and serving as expressions of the island’s soul.

Since its inception, the Kallimasia Folklore Museum has welcomed visitors eager to delve into the island’s heritage and uncover the hidden gems of tradition. As the largest folklore museum in Greece, it stands as a miniature traditional village, reflecting the community’s identity on both local and national scales, while also celebrating diversity.

Driven by an unwavering passion for preserving Chios’s unique folklore, Yiannis Kolliaros meticulously collected artifacts and tools that epitomize the professional and domestic lives of Chians from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.

Stepping through the museum’s doors is like stepping back in time, transporting visitors to an era when women skillfully weaved on looms powered by the wind and men tilled the land with horse-drawn plows.

As Kolliaros himself recounts, “Together with progressive friends, we gathered objects from Kallimasia and Koini. These were enough for the museum’s first exhibition, held in the high school principal’s office.”

Month by month, the collection grew, fueled by a shared vision. With dedication and collaboration from Kallimasia residents and supporters beyond, a traditional stone-built village emerged, complete with a house, cobbler’s shop, tailor’s shop, blacksmith’s shop, café, flour mill, carpenter’s shop, quilt maker’s workshop, threshing floor, and field.

The Kallimasia Folklore Museum stands as a beacon of Chian heritage, inviting visitors on a journey through time to discover the island’s rich cultural tapestry.
