A Modern Marvel Housing Ancient Treasures: The Archaeological Museum of Chios stands out not just for its collection, but also for its architectural significance. Designed in 1965 by renowned Greek architects, it’s considered a landmark in modern Greek architecture.
Built to Endure: Construction on the museum took place between 1966 and 1971, resulting in a spacious building encompassing 2500 square meters.
A Journey Through Time: After renovations in 1998, the museum reopened in 1999. Inside, you’ll find a permanent exhibition spread across five rooms, showcasing a captivating collection of antiquities. These artifacts, unearthed at various ancient sites across Chios like Emporio and Chios town itself, span a vast period – from the Neolithic Era all the way to Roman times.
Beyond the Walls: Step into the museum’s courtyard to discover architectural elements from bygone eras, along with signage and a unique Macedonian-style tomb unearthed in the nearby Fragomahalas neighborhood.
Special Focus: Psara’s Treasures: The museum’s third floor is dedicated to a rotating exhibit titled “Psara in Antiquity.” Here, you’ll be treated to a collection of artifacts like vases, gold jewelry, and intriguing terracotta figurines, all unearthed from the Mycenaean Necropolis of Archontikion on Psara Island.
